GROUND-BREAKING TECHNOLOGY CREATES HI-DEFINITION VISION
Publication:Oakland Press; Date:March 7, 2010; Section:Oakland On The Move; Page:Health&Fitness-12

Incredible innovations with progressive eyeglass lenses have taken vision to a whole new level of clarity with the new FreeForm progressive lenses. Set aside the distorted, blurry progressive (lineless) lenses of years past and experience a digitally-produced, high-definition new breed of lenses. Virtually eliminating the swim and sway sensation of older progressives, this new class is created utilizing an advanced, dual surfacing technology. The result is a custom lens which provides the highest level of true 3D perception and unparalleled optical performance.

FreeForm technology allows lenses to be highly customized for your eyes alone. Dr. Wayne G. Wilde, O.D., of Eye Contact Vision Center in Waterford, said that FreeForm lenses are created using software that simulates the human eye in every angle, prescription, and field of vision. Thousands of points of data are calculated, analyzing the lens properties, the distance from your eye to the lens surface, your frame measurements, and your unique prescription. The calculations are then translated into precision optical performance – the FreeForm lens. Unlike traditional progressive lenses, the bifocal power is created on the back of the FreeForm lens instead of the front. This moves the prescription closer to the eye, allowing wider midrange and reading areas. The result gives the wearer natural visual sharpness without distortion and distance and near zones that work in harmony, he said.

Fans of smaller frames now have a choice, said Dr. Wilde. FreeForm technology dynamically positions the full reading area inside almost any frame – so reducing frame size no longer means sacrificing your reading space, he said.
The success rate with first-time progressive wearers and converters has risen to over 95%. They rave about the sharpness and clarity provided with this technology, said Dr. Wilde.

FreeForm lenses are not available at chain & big box retail stores. It is an exclusive product available only to Dr. Wilde and other private Optometrists. The makers of these lenses insist on experienced hands and careful measurements to produce the proper results.

INNOVATIONS OFFER BETTER VISION
Publication:Oakland Press; Date:March 8, 2009; Section:Oakland On The Move; Page:I-7

You don’t necessarily have to “see” problems with yours eyes in order to have an issue with your vision. Some eye diseases are painless and begin to develop before presenting any symptoms. This is why it is so important to have your vision checked annually. New technology has been developed that can help vision care professionals detect eye diseases, like glaucoma, earlier that ever before.

Glaucoma is a disease that usually occurs when there is increased pressure inside the eye that causes nerve damage. Dr. Wayne G. Wilde, O.D. of Eye Contact Vision Center in Waterford said about 30 percent of glaucoma cases exist even in pressure ranges thought to be normal. Once the nerve begins to be destroyed, it results in blind spots and can eventually lead to total blindness, he said.

However, the early glaucoma detection device his office uses, the GDxVCC, measures the thickness of the nerve fibers and can pick up changes that indicate glaucoma much earlier than other technologies, he said. That’s crucial, because glaucoma is treatable, said Wilde. Treatment, such as eyedrops, can help prevent further damage and preserve eyesight, but once the damage is done, it can’t be reversed.

Advances in eyeglass lenses include new lens designs that help people see better and are very attractive to wear. Multitasking eyeglass lenses are great for computer users, said Wilde. These occupational bifocals are designed to correct immediate vision in the upper portion and closer vision in the lower part. The line between the two is invisible.

Computer users can use the top portion of the lens to focus on the computer terminal, for example, and the bottom part to focus on the keyboard or their work materials in front of them, said Wilde. “Those have helped a lot of people who work on the computer all day long,” he said.

Progressive addition lenses are an invisible bifocal lens digitally produced to maximize range of vision, said Wilde. They are custom made for each person’s individual vision, he said.

In addition to the eyeglass lenses themselves, there are a variety of lens coating options. Anti-reflective coating is popular, said Wilde, because it reduces glare from headlights at night, the computer screen and in other situations. Another lens coating is scratch-resistant coating. Eyeglass wearers can also choose transition lenses that darken in the sun and various lens tints.

There have been some advances in contacts as well. Among them are silicone hydrogel lenses, soft lenses made with materials that allow more oxygen to pass through, said Wilde. These lenses aren’t as prone to dehydration so the result is that they are more comfortable, especially for those who suffer from dry eyes.

Those who would like to opt for a surgical procedure to improve their vision are likely aware of LASIK, which was approved in 1998. Today there is a bladeless LASIK procedure that uses a laser instead of a cutting tool to create a hinged flap in the cornea, said Barbara Kuczynski, M.D., an ophthalmologist who practices at Advanced Ophthalmology Associates in Clawson and is affiliated with Beaumont Hospital. Both types have shown good results, she said. Some surgeons use both procedures in their practice.

While LASIK is a good option for those seeking relief from eyeglasses and contacts, it is not for everyone. For those who have higher near-sightedness or who are not good candidates for LASIK, there is a new option called implantable lenses, said Kuczynski. This is a permanent solution that involves implanting a lens, similar to a contact lens, in the eye during a surgical procedure to correct vision problems.

Dry eyes are a condition people don’t have to suffer from anymore. Wilde said dry eyes can result from numberous factors, including allergies, environmental conditions, medications, age, auto immune disease and more. There are a number of products that can help alleviate the pain and redness from dry eyes, including Restasis, he said.

Those seeking longer eyelashes may want to ask their vision professional about a new product that can help, Latisse. Applied to the lid line, it can help grow longer eyelashes. However, there are some potential side effects, so people do have to be screened and monitored when using Latisse, said Wilde.

Glaucoma is a disease where an excess of fluid in the eye results in elevated pressure. Over time, this pressure damages the optic nerve, which acts as the highway of information to the brain. If you were to picture your eye as a sink, either there would be a clog in the drainage system or too much fluid pouring in the sink, both of which can cause a backup. In the eye, this backup actually results in the death of the nerves in the retina.

The backup, or the pressure building in the eye, typically happens gradually, sneaking up on us with catastrophic results. Often unnoticed until major damage has occurred, a thorough eye examination by Dr. Wilde can, in many cases, save your eyesight.

Of the 4 million people who have glaucoma, only half are aware.

You are at risk of Glaucoma if even one of the following applies to you:

The GDxVCC Screening Exam – Ask for it.

The GDxVCC, an instrument devoted to detecting glaucoma up to five years ahead of previous technologies, evaluates the actual site where glaucoma damage occurs – the nerve fiber layer of the retina. The test takes less than one minute, requires no pupil dilation, and causes absolutely no discomfort. The standard pressure check (tonometry) is only effective for detecting glaucoma in 50% of patients with this disease. Visual field testing (perimetry) is limited to measuring vision already lost to glaucoma.

The GDxVCC evaluates the pattern and thickness of the optic nerve fiber layer in the back of your eye, which is hidden under the surface of the retina. A thinning of these nerve fibers could indicate glaucoma long before any vision has been lost. New studies indicate that you can lose 40% of the nerve fiber layer before you start losing vision. A frightening statistic and one of the reasons new instruments like this have been developed.

What does this technology mean to you?

Dr. Wilde, one of the few doctors in the area with this instrument, will have this information at his fingertips. This gives him more time to treat the disease. This gives him more time to prevent loss of our most precious gift – our eyesight.

Call us today to learn more information about the GDxVCC and it’s sight-saving capabilities.

Eye Vitamins: Enhancing Eye Health & Total Wellbeing

Dr. Wilde believes in healthy eyes are part of a healthy body. In fact, the whole-body formula vitamins available through our office are perfect for the person looking to naturally maintain a healthy body and healthy eyesight.

Evidence based nutrients, elemental lutien and zeaxanthin, and complete daily vitamin components combine to form a vitamin designed to promote, maintain, and preserve optimum eye and whole-body health.

Why is this good for me?

As we age, our bodies have more difficulty processing nutrients and vitamins from our diets, making it harder to obtain the needed essentials. And studies show that our diets are not as nutrient rich as they should be.

Every structure in our eyes and body rely on precious vitamins and minerals to work at their optimum level. When we don’t get enough from our diet, our eyes and bodies don’t perform to their maximum potential. Damage can occur on a molecular level that we aren’t even aware of.

Are All Vitamins The Same?

No. In order to make vitamins more affordable, many manufacturers skimp on key ingredients that allow the vitamins to fully absorb into our system. Another trick is to use synthetic versions of vitamins with a small portion of the natural vitamin thrown in the mix. This allows the manufacturer to use the word “Natural” on the label. Additives are another way of cutting the cost of the vitamin. If the vitamin has a small portion of the real thing and an inexpensive additive makes up the rest, it is much cheaper to manufacture. The less expensive the vitamin, the less vitamin you are getting.

Dr. Wilde’s Recommendation

After researching the available supplements, Dr. Wilde recommends MedOp’s MaxiVision Whole Body formula. This vegetarian eye nutrient and daily multivitamin is manufactured using the most advanced, progressive protocols available for maintaining overall health and maximizing visual function.

MaxiVision vitamins have taken up the fight against age-related macular degeneration, helping patients with the condition and preventing it in family members of those afflicted. Studies are also being conducted, evaluating the ingredients in MaxiVision vitamins and their effect on the treatment of cataracts and moderate vision loss.

For those afflicted with Dry Eye symptoms, Dr. Wilde recommends adding MedOp’s MaxiTears Dry Eye formula to your supplement regimen. The advanced softgels are specifically formulated for maximum tear production and retention.

Call or stop in to purchase MaxiVision vitamins or MaxiTears supplements and make sure you are getting maximum value for your money.

Check Out The Following Symptoms:

Eye fatigue

A feeling of sand in the eyes

Difficulty wearing contact lenses

Intolerance to wind, fans, or smoke

Redness

Blurry vision

Itching

Burning or stinging

Watery eyes

Watery eyes? Surprisingly enough, a dry eye can be excessively wet! This is actually the body responding to the dryness in the eye, sending a multitude of tears in an attempt to heal & moisten the affected area. Watering can often be a tell-tale sign that Dry Eye has settled in.

Any of the symptoms above could indicate you have Dry Eye, so be sure to inform Dr. Wilde or our staff if you are affected. We’ll give you an in-depth evaluation and discuss new treatment options.

Who Does Dry Eye Affect?

Just about anyone can get dry eyes, but there are some groups that are more prone than others. If you find you can claim one of the following factors, you could be at risk:

Females, especially after menopause

Medications (Birth control pills, antihistamines, antidepressants to name just a few)

Arthritis sufferers

Dry or dusty environment

Contact lens wear, especially with poorly fit lenses

Computer users

What NOT To Do:

Don’t use a “redness reliever” (this won’t help your dry eye and may eventually make your eyes redder)

Don’t use a computer for an extended period without giving yourself blink breaks (blinking relubricates the eye)

Don’t ignore the symptoms (long term dry eye may actually cause permanent damage to your cornea)

Don’t sleep in your contacts (we don’t produce tears when we sleep – making a dry eye even worse)

Don’t go outside without sunglasses (a closely fitting pair of shades will protect your eyes from wind and dust)

How We Can Help

Set Your Vision Free With New Free Form Technology

Progressive Lens Wearers – Get Ready To Step Into a Clear New World

One of the many products making life easier in the eyeglass lens world are the new Free Form progressive lenses.

No two sets of eyes are the same and Free Form technology allows lenses to be highly customized entirely for your eyes alone. Free Form lenses are created using software that simulates the human eye in every angle, prescription, and field of vision. Thousands of points of data are calculated, taking into account the lens material and thickness, the distance from your eye to the lens surface, the exact measurements of the eyeglass frame you choose, your unique prescription, and a multitude of other factors. The calculations are then translated into precision optical performance – the Free Form lens. The result gives the wearer natural visual sharpness without distortion, distance and near zones that work in total harmony, and undisturbed vision while moving.

Fans of smaller frames can now rejoice in choice! Free Form technology dynamically positions the full reading area inside almost any frame – so reducing frame size no longer means sacrificing your reading space!

The success rate with first-time progressive wearers has catapulted and converters have raved about the sharpness and clarity provided with this technology.

Free Form lenses are not available at chain & big box retail stores. It is an exclusive product available only to Dr. Wilde and other private Optometrists. The makers of these lenses insist on experienced hands and careful measurements to produce the proper results.

For maximum comfort, Free Form lenses are available in the thinnest, most lightweight materials and superior anti-reflective surface treatments to reduce glare.

“I’m extremely pleased with my new glasses, which have the new FreeForm progressive lenses. I can see so clearly and there is no visual distortion when I turn my head!” – Mary Anne

Here’s What Our Patients Are Saying About Us.

“Dr Wilde & his staff provide the finest personal and professional eye care available. Dr Wilde’s attention to detail and desire to improve his patient’s lives make him an extraordinary optometrist. I have been a patient of Dr Wilde’s for 23 years. Dr Wayne Wilde has made an enormous impact on my life.

When I was sixteen years old he fitted me for contact lenses. Dr Wilde took the time to ensure that I completely understood the importance of lens care. During my years as a carefree youth; I managed to wear my lenses too long, not clean them properly and in return developed several issues with lens wear. Dr. Wilde was always there to provide the proper diagnosis, treatment and advice. I was always able to continue wearing contact lenses. Lens use gave me freedom from glasses. Dr Wilde took the time to get to know me. He knew that my lifestyle (sports, work, and military service) was greatly improved by lens wear. He provided me with different options to meet my needs.

Progressing through life I became a police officer and expanded my role in the United States Army National Guard. Both occupations involved long hours, the threat of losing a lens at a critical moment and the need to be free from eyewear. Dr Wilde and I had always discussed RK and PRK. He was never an advocate of either surgery. Dr Wilde’s knowledge of optometry, personal care and advice were very important to me. I held off on both options. In 1999 the use of LASIK grew. Dr Wilde kept me abreast of his assessment on the procedure. In the spring of 1999 he recommended LASIK to me. His recommendation was all I needed to feel confident about the procedure. My police partner and I both received LASIK in April of 1999.

Dr Wilde spent several pre-operation appointments with me; ensuring that my eye’s were measured and mapped properly, I understood the procedure and personal preparation. The results I received were incredible, 20/15 in each eye! No halo effect or any other side effect. I have no doubt that Dr Wilde put me in a position to have this type of success.

Within four years of the surgery I found myself deployed to Iraq for 15 months with the Army National Guard. Our primary mission was conducting convoy escorts on the most dangerous routes in the war zone. Nothing was more important than constantly scanning for enemy threats (IEDs, snipers, ambushes). Sandstorms were a common occurrence during the summer months and I was stuck there for two summers. Nothing proved more beneficial to me than to have great eyesight without the hassle of glasses or contacts. Dr Wilde put me in a position to not only see well, but to keep me alive in a hostile environment!

I recently returned for my 10 year eye examination. Each eye was still 20/15 and no side effects. Dr Wilde’s care has not changed at all. He has moved to a new office, received numerous awards and accolades, but still takes plenty of time at every exam to check your eyesight and the person.

Dr Wilde’s personal care, ability and desire to truly get to know the person is extremely rare these days. I feel that after 23 years of care he is not just my eye doctor, but a friend and role model. We are lucky and blessed to have him in the Waterford area to serve us. My only regret is that by having LASIK through him, I haven’t been able to spend as much time with him. Thank you Dr. Wilde.”
Major, MP
Michigan Army National Guard

“For years, I have struggled with dry eyes and poor vision. Glasses made me feel restrained and contacts made me feel tired. For many years, I really struggled, but after reading that you were one of the top eye doctors in the area in the Oakland Press, I gave you a try and was very pleased. You minimized my discomfort and tried hard to find glasses and contacts that would work for me. But when that wasn’t good enough, you put me in touch with a great laser clinic, and helped me through the surgery, and now I am truly happy because my eyes are now great.

Thank you again for your help. I particularly felt that your office was friendly, your staff was very helpful, and that you took the time to explain yourself. It is important to me that I understand what is going on – I may not be a doctor, but they are my eyes, and I am glad that you take the time to explain yourself as you work to help your patients with their eye problems.”
- Kyle McGrath

“When my ophthalmologist referred me to you as a specialist in contact lenses, my vision was nowhere near what it should have been. I really shouldn’t have been driving. From my first visit with you, my vision has improved to the point that I see 20/25 and I’m still able to work at 78 years old! What a blessing!

You are without a doubt the most knowledgeable eye doctor I have ever been treated by and your staff is without comparison!”
- Joseph Boring

“After having worn contact lenses prescribed at Wal-mart for many years, I began to have a feeling of irritation in my left eye. Over the course of a day or two, this dramatically worsened; the eye became highly inflamed, oozing fluid and ultra sensitive to light, leaving me unable to open my eyelid and in severe pain. I felt I needed to find an eye doctor with a higher level of experience, and luckily for me, I chose Dr. Wilde. He correctly diagnosed my serious eye infection and its cause and set up a treatment plan which quickly brought the infection under control. Today, I am back to wearing contact lenses, but with the prescription and in the manner recommended by Dr. Wilde, to keep my precious eyesight safe. I believe I could have had serious consequences had I not sought out the expertise of Dr. Wilde. I highly recommend his practice and cannot say enough about the competence and compassion of his entire staff.”
- Vince Cesaro

“I have been a patient of Dr. Wilde for the past 13 years. He is definitely the “Best of the Best!” He and his staff have given me excellent treatment in the care of my eyes. In particular, Dr. Wilde detected my glaucoma condition and has taken great care in keeping my eye pressure under control. Each of his staff members excel in their area of expertise. I am extremely pleased with my new glasses, which have the new FreeForm progressive lenses. I can see so clearly and there is no visual distortion when I turn my head!”
- Mary Anne

“I wanted to take a moment to express my thanks, and my admiration, for the professional service delivered by virtually everyone in your office. I found your office through pure “luck” while searching in the Yellow Pages. I knew that I would need glasses, however, my past experience with ill fitting glasses left me less than enthusiastic about the prospect. Well, let me just say, I am pleasantly surprised! My glasses fit perfectly and are comfortable to wear.

From my initial phone contact and throughout the process I could not have received better treatment and/or care. You and your staff are friendly and exceptionally knowledgable. I was particularly impressed with the fact that after my glasses had been made and fitted by one of your employees, as SECOND gentleman, presumably the person who actually makes the glasses and frames, ALSO checked the fit and recommended a small adjustment.

My suggestion to others is that if you are looking for assembly line work – go elsewhere. The doctor and his staff at the Eye Contact Vision Center are the “real deal”. On the other hand, if you are particular about your healthcare and the people you entrust it to, well, you will be hard pressed to find a more qualified, professional group.

Believe it or not, all sunglasses are NOT created with your vision’s best interests in mind.

When shopping for sunglasses, most people look for a pair of shades with a tint that cuts glare from light. Most people are mindful enough to know that sunglasses should block the ultraviolet rays from the sun. And, of course, most people want their sunglasses to look good.

Before you decide to shop for your new shades, make sure you keep the following in mind:

Cheap Lenses Can Impair Your Vision
Yes, that’s right. Those inexpensive sunglasses you picked up at the corner store are usually built with low-grade non-ophthalmic material. Warpage and abberations common to these materials will actually distort your vision. It’s similar to looking through a funhouse mirror. Quality sunglasses are made with ophthalmic grade lenses that are warp and distortion free, allowing you crisp, clear vision even in the brightest situations.

If you aren’t sure if your current sunglass lenses are helping or hurting your vision, give us a call. We can place your sunglasses in front of our chart projector which will readily reveal any distortion on the eyechart – right before your eyes!

Tint vs Polarized
Tinted lenses darken what you see. Polarized lenses eliminate the glare that makes seeing difficult.

With a tint, you are letting less light into your eye – basically making what you are seeing seem darker. Polarized lenses remove the blinding, glaring rays of the sun, all the while letting appropriate vision enter your eye. It is the most comfortable, safest means of glare protection.

Polarized lenses are highly recommended for everyday use for their glare reduction and increased visual performance. You’ll also see drastic benefits for driving, outdoor occupations, sports, boating, and fishing. Sit on the beach and not be bothered by the glare off the water!

Backside Anti-Reflection Protection
Adding a non-glare treatment to the back surface of your sunglass lenses absorbs the bouncing glare that we get from behind. Any time you experience glare, your visual potential is decreased.

A good example of this type of glare is when you see the reflection of your eye in the back of your sunglasses. That reflection is actually blocking your vision. Requesting a back surface anti-reflection treatment will cure this troublesome backside bouncing!

The Darker The Better…Right?
Wrong! When your eyes are behind a very dark sunglass lens, your pupils react the same as they do at night or in a dark room – they widen. While beneficial at night, a wide pupil in the sunlight lets in more damaging rays. Opt for Polarized lenses – their glare cutting properties eliminates the need for a darker lens.

Color Conundrums
Does the color of the lens make any difference? Absolutely! Studies are now heavily favoring an amber colored lens for best overall visual performance & clarity. An amber lens will stop blue light rays from entering your eye which are the most glare producing rays in the spectrum. Brown lenses run a close second to amber. Amber and brown tones provide visual contrast and add a warming sense to your view.

Grey lenses, on the other hand, will keep your colors neutral and add a coolness to the scene. However, they can’t compare in the contrast category with amber.

Pass on yellow tints for sunwear. Yellow does add contrast, but on the downside it will brighten an already bright, sunny day.

The best overall sport performer is amber. Amber wins hands down for snow, winter sports, marine activities, fishing, and golf due to its glare cutting nature and contrast creating properties.

Our stylist and lens expert can provide guidance on which color will be best for you.

UV – The Sunglass Must Have
Ultraviolet (UV) rays damage our eyes just like they damage your skin. It is critical that your sunglasses block UV from entering your eyes.

Look for lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. Polarized lenses come equipped with maximum blockage as part of their manufacturing process, as are some of the different materials of which prescription eyeglass lenses are made.

If you aren’t sure whether your sunglasses are giving you maximum protection, we’ll be happy to check them out. Just give us a call or stop by and we’ll put them to the test.

Frame Fundamentals
It’s true…size does matter. A large sunglass frame will offer more protection than those smaller shades. A bigger frame tends to block from above near the brow and below where light reflects up from the ground. Look for wrapping or curved frames that sit close to the face and block rays from the side.

Beware of small frames that sit far from your face – all those gaps between you and the frame are letting harmful rays bypass the protection afforded from your lenses.

How Can We Help?
Our trained stylists will give expert recommendations for your lifestyle, sports, and recreation as to which sunglass lenses, treatments, and frames will best suit your needs. When you’re out in the glaring sun, you won’t have to worry about your eyes. We blend fashion and function so not only will your sunglasses look great, they’ll also give you maximum visual performance when you need it most.

The votes are tallied and a determination is made of 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and honorable mention. For the fourth year in a row, Dr. Wilde has received the highest honor of 1st place!

What Does This Mean To You?

It means you’ll receive the most thorough care possible. It means that your vision is just as important to him as it is to you. It means Dr. Wilde does not just determine if you have a prescription, but goes above and beyond to search for diseases that may threaten your eyesight. It means that you’ll benefit from his whole-body approach to eyecare, looking for signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Our patients consistently rave about the thoroughness of his examination. They leave our office with a better understanding of not only their eyesight, but how the eyes reveal so much more about our bodies. Many of our patients have gratefully thanked Dr. Wilde for his encouragement to get urgent treatment for life-threatening conditions that his in-depth eye exam uncovered that previously went undetected.

Without doubt, when you visit our office you will receive the best eye examination you’ve ever experienced from the best Optometrist in the area.
